Election candidate urges people to support ‘Shop Local Saturday’ campaign

Cork ARC patron Simon Zebo and Jim McCarthy of Fermoy are calling on the people of Fermoy to support Cork ARC in their annual appeal in the town on Friday, May 16.
Zebo says, “Cork ARC is a vital support centre for people in Co. Cork, offering cancer patients and their families a place of comfort and support, free of charge. Please show your support and help Cork ARC raise much needed funds for their cancer support services”.
Cork ARC Cancer Support House is a voluntary organisation and registered charity providing a safe haven where people with cancer and their families can find practical help and emotional support. A cancer diagnosis can have a profound psychological impact on patients and family members and our free cancer support services are designed to bridge this gap in the primary healthcare service and meet the needs of cancer patients and their families.
Hilary Sullivan, head of fundraising / Corporate Affairs at Cork ARC Cancer Support House says: “Please remember on Friday 16th May that all our collectors are volunteers. Hopefully their generosity of spirit will be rewarded by a warm reception from the people of Fermoy, despite the difficult financial conditions experienced by so many people.
We are very grateful to all of our Volunteers and the people of Fermoy for their continued support. The fact that our services are free of charge is of great benefit to people with cancer and their families in this financial climate. I would also like to take this opportunity to assure all of our supporters that all funds received by Cork ARC are used directly for the provision of cancer support services for our visitors. With no guaranteed funding, Cork ARC relies on the goodwill and generosity of the community and we greatly appreciate all donations”.
In 2013 Cork ARC received approximately 4,000 visits from people affected by cancer. They availed of their services which include drop in and telephone support, counselling, therapeutic massage and reflexology, support groups, education and information programmes and a wide range of group programmes such as art therapy, meditation, T’ai Chi and Yoga.
Cork ARC strive to meet the changing needs of their visitors and have introduced information on general welfare and benefit entitlements, a cancer support blog, a walking programme and a prostate cancer support group. Cork ARC also recently opened their first outreach service in Knocknaheeny.
Cork ARC Cancer Support House is located on O’Donovan Rossa Road, near the main gates of UCC. The centre is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and from 9.30am to 3pm on Friday.
The Outreach centre in Knocknaheeny is open on Mondays from 9.30am – 1.30pm. Telephone Number: 021-4276688.
