County Mayor launches Pride in Our Community 2015

The village of Coolagown has been recognised for it’s commitment to sustaining and enhancing sustainable living in their community at the first annual An Taisce Green Communities Awards Ceremony.
An Taisce’s Greening Communities programme is a national initiative that shines a light on communities that are protecting and enhancing their natural heritage while respecting the resources they use to make their community a better place to live and work.
Since last year, An Taisce has been working closely with Coolagown who have successfully adopted a number of ‘Greening Communities Challenges’ that meet the needs of their community and match the principles of the programme.
Last week, following the successful completion of these challenges, Coolagown along with Killorglin in Kerry and Wexford town have achieved the accolade and at an event in the Custom House in Dublin received their ‘Greening Communities’ Award.
Reacting to the announcement, John Feeney of Coologown Development Group said the Green Community Programme helped to develop a green strategy for the area.
“Coolagown has been working for the last 25 years to enhance our village and make it a better place for those living there. Caring for the environment through education and generating awareness locally has been a fundamental part of all our development plans.
“An Taisce Green Homes and the Green Communities Programme were key to achieving this. The Green Community Programme worked with us to identify opportunities to develop a green strategy.”
At the awards ceremony in the Mansion House, Michael John O’Mahony, Assistant Director of An Taisce EEU, congratulated Coolagown and the other communities on receiving their awards.
“I am delighted for the communities receiving this award today. I would like to commend all of those who have been involved in the Green Communities Programme in each of these areas.
“They have worked together and made a contribution to Ireland’s sustainability at a local level and will continue to do so into the future.
“Through their endeavours and sustaining efforts these communities have set a benchmark and a challenge to other communities around Ireland,” he said.
The Greening Communities programme has been developed by An Taisce’s Environmental Education Unit in association with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of the Environment, Community & Local Government.
