October 2020 saw Carraig na bhFear student Conor Callinan break a 35-year-old pole vault record with a clearance of 4.20 metres at the South Munster Schools Championships.

The Leevale AC member was then announced the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month for October 2020 in late December, and having competed in the intermediate (U17) age group, now has his sights set on breaking further records to qualify for the European U18 Championships in August.

Conor took up pole vaulting after the opening of the Leevale High Performance Centre in 2017.

“With a strong background in sprints, hurdles and gymnastics, John Naughton who was coaching Conor thought that he might have an aptitude for pole vault,” said Derrick Neff, who coached Conor at Leevale AC.
