Computer science is due to be rolled out to fifth year students at Colaiste and Chraoibhin from next September, one of forty schools across the country that will be set to take the first ever Leaving Cert exam in Computer Science in June 2020.

The subject will be rolled out to all schools across the state at some point in the near future. The new subject will also be the first Leaving Cert subject to be examined online on computers or laptops during the Leaving Cert alongside the other Leaving Cert exams which are handwritten.

Christy Healy, principal of Coláiste and Chraoibhín is delighted that Coláiste has been selected as one of the 40 pilot schools.

There will be a brand new IT room in the new building which is due to be open in the spring and there are teachers already employed at the school who are qualified to teach the new subject.

"We have the raw materials," Mr Healy said. "It's a service we need to provide for the young people. Industry is calling for this with a long time."
