Shihan Brian Toomey, of Fermoy Karate Club, was recently honoured with The Community Spirit Award by the Cork Martial Arts Promotion, in recognition of his outstanding work with the development of wheelchair karate over the years.

Speaking to The Avondhu this week, Brian said wheelchair karate has grown significantly in popularity and availability in recent years.

“It’s been developed over the last number of year, since 2002, and it’s grown since then. I’m actually starting a new class with Enable Ireland next Monday.

“The club in Fermoy was the first totally inclusive club in Ireland, and we do a special wheelchair class in Mallow on Tuesday’s as well,” he said.
