Fermoy Macra took home second place on Sunday (31st May) at Macra’s National Dairy Council All-Ireland tag rugby final which was held in Athboy Rugby club, Co Meath, with South Longford Macra taking home the top prize.

Macra's new National President Seán Finan, congratulated Fermoy Macra, crediting their hard work and training for their success.

“Tag rugby is a great competition – keeping members fit and providing a fantastic social outlet. It caters for everyone – whether they participate in other sports or are looking for a fun team activity. A special word of thanks to our health and wellbeing partners, the National Dairy Council who have provided us with information on a healthy lifestyle for our website macra.ie.”

Speaking to The Avondhu, Tom Ahern, chairperson of Fermoy Macra emphasised that the final was a close run encounter.

“We only lost by 3 points. This tag rugby was 7 players-a-side and each team consisted of at least 2 girls on the pitch at all times. It was great craic and we came so close to winning it just like Mitchelstown Macra managed to do last year. Ironically we had beaten them in the Avondhu final to qualify for this All-Ireland competition.”
