Residents living in the cottages on Clonmel Road, Mitchelstown are living in fear that their homes will flood, as the Gradog River behind their houses has started overflowing towards their residences.

Tom O'Shea, who lives in 8 Clonmel Road with his wife, told The Avondhu that the problem has been getting worse for the past three years.

ACTION NEEDED

With all of the recent heavy rain and flood warnings, they want the council to do something to make sure that they don't wake up some morning to a river in their back garden. "We have invested a lot in our home and we don't want to see a boat in the back garden," he said.

He added that the house is where he was reared and he doesn't want to see it ruined, but that every year the situation is getting more worrying. "Every year, we can see the river roaring, but it will be too late to do something when it's coming up the gardens," Tom said.

Tom said that the residents are very worried about what the future holds, but that from now into the summer is the time to get something done.

He suggested that if the earth at either side of the river was dug out, it could be used to build an embankment, which could save the houses from the prospect of being flooded, by what Tom described as a potential 'roaring river' in future years.
