Infrastructural work costing in the region of €38,000 has been carried out to Ballynoe National School and a Christmas day swim is being organised to help raise the cash.
Having considered a number of options, the school decided that the most straightforward choice was the Christmas Day dip, which will take place at Claycastle Strand in Youghal.
This important fundraising event was formally launched in Ballynoe National School on Thursday evening, October 23rd - in attendance were teachers and parents, along with representatives from the board of management (BOM). MC for the launch was Denis Walsh, who is BOM chairman.
Denis outlined how the school needed to act to make sure all of its 108 students could be accommodated. Most of the cost centred on a pre-fab, a storage container, a new shelter and other improvement works. He went on to explain that in this instance, Department of Education funding wasn't forthcoming.
Endorsing the work carried out by the community and lending her support to the fundraiser was school principal, Mary Mulcahy. Mary said the school has experienced considerable growth in recent times and that the extra accommodation space had to be sourced. She urged as many people as possible to support the swim.
OFF TO A GOOD START
The fundraising campaign isn't starting completely from scratch as local clergy members are making available €5,000 from parish funds - Denis Walsh said this was a very generous gesture and he thanked Fr. Andrew Carvill for his assistance in this matter. The fundraising project has also managed to secure a main sponsor in the shape of BH Tree Services, who were represented on the night by Liam Barry. Liam said he was delighted to do his bit for the cause, again, Denis thanked Liam for his generosity.
COLLECT YOUR CARD
There are plenty sponsorship cards available and basically it's a matter of getting your card and collecting the money. There is a 'second phase' to the fundraising - details of which will be revealed at a later date.
