The South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association (SEMRA) were called to Coumshingaun in west Waterford on Monday, after a walker fell and suffered a suspected spinal injury.

In what was a very challenging rescue, a helicopter was unable to be deployed owing to a combination of the terrain and the poor weather conditions.

After being contacted by gardaí, SEMRA were at Kilclooney Woods just before 4pm, while those with the injured party kept the individual warm and comfortable. While the coast guard helicopter was dispatched because of the potential severity of the injury, it had to be stood down and the victim was eventually stretchered out of the area over a boulder field and on steep ground.

21 members of SEMRA were on the scene and the victim was handed over to a waiting crew of the National Ambulance Service and an advanced paramedic at Kilclooney Bridge at around 9pm that evening.
