Students from CBS Secondary School in Mitchelstown recently added their voices to the national debate, when they represented the school at Comhairle na nOg in Cork.
Comhairle na nOg was established under the National Children’s Strategy and the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, with a view to involving young people in decision making at a local level on issues that are of concern to them and to provide a structure to feed into national decision making through Dáil na nOg.
Transition Year students Michael and Jack Blackburne, John O'Donoghue and Enda McKenna, joined other students from across various schools in the county. The whole day centred around participation and debate and upon arrival, the students were invited to write on a wall about their ideal for Cork and the world around them.
They were then divided up into groups, where each grouping was assigned a Minister and they each had to propose a change for Ireland, which would make it a better place to live for young people. Over the course of the afternoon, the students then debated issues such as the voting age, abortion and student rights and they discussed how life in their own areas could be improved.
One thing which the CBS boys said came across strongly from the Mitchelstown/Fermoy area, was that there should be more age appropriate options in both leisure and recreation.
