The staff and students in CBS Primary, Mitchelstown have raised €923 through their Easter raffle and fundraising efforts, to help towards sending one of the teachers, Elaine O'Gorman to Belarus in July to do volunteer work in orphanages.

The money was raised through an Easter treasure hunt, an Easter quiz and a raffle and all of this was organised by the members of the student's council, who were rewarded with delicious Easter eggs for all of their hard work and dedication.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Speaking to the students and staff members, Elaine said that their contribution will make a huge difference to the children in Belarus.

Explaining what she will do while there, Elaine said that she will be working in orphanages with children who are very poor and that the money raised by the CBS staff and pupils will be used to bring them out on trips and outings. Elaine will also be bringing things like instruments, art equipment, blankets and bottles with her. She thanked the staff members and students for their generous donation.

Two students won generous hampers - Declan Murphy in third class and Conor Davern of fifth class. Before the school took a break for its Easter holidays, a number of Easter eggs were also presented and various different achievements were recognised.

This year, the school sent 30 students to the inter primary schools swimming gala in Fermoy Leisure Centre and the Irish coordinator, Ber O'Sullivan pointed out that the gala is really difficult, so it was great to see so many going. She added that they enter every year, but that the numbers have now increased two fold.

FURTHER ACHIEVEMENTS

The fifth class students also have a chewing gum disposal bin on display in the town council offices in Fermoy, after they came third in a competition run by Fermoy Leisure Centre. The boys, with the help of their teacher Mr Breen, used bottles, tins and other recycled materials to make a bin and as a reward for their efforts, they will enjoy a pool party in the leisure centre on June 19.

Fifth class pupil Leon Craven also recently took part in the county final of the Eason's Spelling Bee, but unfortunately was caught out with the spelling of the word 'committee'.

On April 7, students Ben Evans, Ben O'Sullivan, Sean O'Connell and Pierce Burke will be going to the RDS in Dublin for the All-Ireland final of the Credit Union quiz for the Under 11 category. They were presented with special T-shirts to wear on the day, sponsored by Mitchelstown Credit Union, who also provided them with sponsorship money for petrol for the trip and meals on the day. The staff members who helped the students to get this far were also thanked.

Easter eggs were also presented to the winners of the Easter quiz and the members of the student's council were again thanked for all of their hard work in preparing and organising the quiz.

Final preparations were also being made to the school ezine, which is made up of articles, examples of art, drawings and pictures from each class - a project which has been running very successfully for three years now.
