Mangan’s garage in Cappoquin was gutted by fire on Monday evening. The garage, which services mainly tractors and agricultural machinery, is located near Mount Melleray.
The blaze is understood to have broken out in the stores area of the garage. Fire services were alerted at around 4.30pm and units from Cappoquin, Lismore and Dungarvan attended. Luckily, given the time of the fire when employees were still present, no-one was injured the blaze. There was no heavy machinery inside the garage at the time but all equipment, fixtures and fittings as well as quantities of stock were destroyed.
The fire service remained at the scene overnight on Monday. The main danger was the explosion hazard posed by a number of acetylene bottles in the garage. They had to be continuously cooled over a 24-hour period by the fire brigade. A unit remained on the site until Tuesday afternoon to do so.
