Capoeira is an important part of Brazilian culture and with a sizeable Brazilian population in the north Cork area, it's no surprise that this discipline, which incorporates dance, acrobatics and music, is being practised widely.

Exponents of the art were in Fermoy Leisure Centre last Saturday for a capoeira session that ran for several hours. Everyone seemed to enjoy the occasion which attracted a variety of age groups. A number of locals with connections to the Brazilian and Portuguese communities also tried their hand at a dance form that doubles as a type of martial art.

Nimbleness and flexibility are key assets, with kicks and spins featuring prominently. The capoeira group took time out for some fruit juice and other fluids, but it was soon back to more of the moves that are accompanied with Brazilian berimbau music.
