The Cork Counselling Centre which has seen attendance triple in the past 12 months, was established to provide professional counselling to people regardless of religious beliefs, ethnic background, nationality, educational level, financial status or sexual orientation.

From its foundation, the Centre’s counselling services were in high demand. With a belief that ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference, People come to counselling for many reasons such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks, suicidal thoughts and attempts, relationship difficulties, bereavement, suicide bereavement, parenting issues, physical abuse, sexual abuse, stress, trauma, diagnoses of physical illness, stress and work related difficulties and financial difficulties etc.

In the counselling centre, clients are offered counselling irrespective of their ability to pay. Over time the centre has grown and stretched in its attempt to meet the ever-growing needs of the community and in 1989 was granted charitable status. Due to the current economic crisis its sources of funding have been cut and charitable donations have decreased. Yet because of its ethos of inclusiveness and accessibility to all, the recent downturn has meant that once again its services are in high demand.

Because the number of people attending has tripled in the past twelve months, the centre has needed to provide additional ongoing crisis intake appointments on a weekly basis. Those in crisis have come from a number of different populations. As expected many clients are direct victims of the economic downturn. In addition however, the crisis in the economy has also profoundly affected those who are already on the margins. With increasing pressure in these recessionary times the services are stretched to their limits and so, in order to continue to support the community, fundraising events such as their Halloween Party this Thursday in Cork City Gaol will help to continue to deliver the services available to the wider community.

The Cork Counselling Centre can be contacted by calling 021-4274951 or by calling in person to make an appointment at No 7, Fr Mathew Street, Cork.
