Call to name Fermoy bridge in honour of Thomas Kent

With 1916 approaching and the country preparing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising, a suggestion to rename Fermoy bridge in honour of Thomas Kent has been made by one former town mayor.

With 1916 approaching and the country preparing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising, a suggestion to rename Fermoy bridge in honour of Thomas Kent has been made by one former town mayor.

Former town councillor John Murphy, said a number of people within the town have suggested renaming the 150-year-old bridge to mark the Castlelyons native who was executed in May 1916 for his role in the uprising.

“I feel it would be very appropriate, given the upcoming centenary celebrations and the fact that he was famously photographed crossing the bridge in 1916 ..."
