Independent TD Mattie McGrath has condemned the vandalism caused recently at the Mountain Lodge/Glengarra Youth Hostel.

As reported in last week's Avondhu, the building had a large amount of lead stripped from its roof. The structure also had all of its double lancet windows in the lodge broken. The Gothic revival-style windows are considered unique.

The indepedent deputy labelled it "A despicable and cowardly attack on a much loved local amenity," and said he had no doubt but that the lead was sold on for a tidy profit.

BILL ENACTMENT SOUGHT

Pointing out that he's been trying for nearly two years now to get the Minister for Justice to enact his 'Scrap and Precious Metal Bill', he said it was specifically designed to make it hard for thieves to sell on lead and other precious metals and would be punative on anyone convicted of doing so.

Despite wide cross party support, he says, the minister has allowed the bill to sit, while such activity flourishes. "Buildings like the Mountain Lodge continue to draw the attention of thieves because they know that they can remove and sell the lead and other metal material from such structures without much fear of reprisals. It has to end."

He commended Burncourt Community Council for their efforts in trying to sublease the hostel, as well as trying to source funding to rescue and conserve it.
