Broadband let down

News that the Government has agreed to Fianna Fáil’s request for a full Dáil debate on the major broadband problem facing rural Ireland while welcome, reminds us once again of the false promise made by the Government when vying for power at the last general election and again before May’s local elections.

Not alone have they not delivered on their promise to deliver high quality broadband to all areas, but they have scrapped the National Broadband Scheme which provided basic broadband services to rural users through a subsidy to providers. This, we are told, will directly result in broadband users having to pay an extra €176 per year for the service.

Mitchelstown was one of the areas mentioned that was to have super fast broadband long before now. This newspaper reported one particular case in the past where a company left the town simply because of poor broadband quality.

Businesses without a secure and reliable broadband service simply cannot compete. Here in The Avondhu office alone, we find the delay through inadequate broadband speeds is costing valuable time - and money. If the Government is serious in its commitment to rural Ireland then they must deliver on this essential service!
