Fermoy's young people now have access to a new social and recreational venue following last Thursday's official opening of a facility in Fitzgerald Place, Fermoy (formerly the headquarters of McCarthy Insurances Group).

To be known as CDYSF (Cloyne Diocesan Youth Services Fermoy) it's based on the 'youth cafe' model and will be the focal point for a range of youth activities such as: music group, camera club, astronomy club, film making and computer games - it will also accommodate members of FACE, a group that works with children who have learning difficulties in addition to facilitating the Fermoy Community Drugs Initiative.

Speaking at the launch, youth council volunteer, Laura Flynn thanked the many individuals and groups who had assisted with setting up CDYSF.

The official opening was performed by Cllr Noel O'Connor, Cork County Mayor - a public representative with strong links to Fermoy. Mayor O'Connor expressed the hope that the centre would be extensively used by young people, who he described 'as the business and political leaders of the future'.

He was assisted in tape cutting duties by Mayor of Fermoy Cllr Olive Corcoran who said the centre had the potential to be a 'social and recreational hub for Fermoy's youth'.

Other politicians in attendance included: Frank O'Flynn, Noel McCarthy, Tadhg O'Donovan and John Murphy - the centre's director will be Martina Daly who has played a critical role in bringing the project to fruition.

CDYSF is already up and running and the feedback to date has been very encouraging. Further information on the centre is available from 086-8031200 or by e-mailing martina@cdys.ie
