On a bitterly cold Easter Monday, the conditions were hardly conducive to good fishing for the traditional Bolster Cup Competition on the River Funcheon. Nevertheless, some hardy anglers stuck at it, defying the biting East wind and the gin-clear water.

The weigh-in took place at John Cotter’s Bar in Kilworth where Tony O’Sullivan from Castlelyons Trout Anglers was declared to be a very popular winner by the Hon Secretary of Fermoy and District Trout Anglers, Luke Heffernan. In second place was Sean O'Connell of Ballyhooly Trout Anglers.

Fermoy and District Trout Anglers would like to thank all who supported the competition and also all the clubs on the Funcheon for their on-going co-operation. A special word of thanks is due to the Cotter family for their hospitality at the weigh-in, after a long day on the river the delicious soup and sandwiches were much appreciated.

Tony O’Sullivan now joins the many anglers from Castlelyons who have won the Bolster Cup in the past, including Liam Martin who has won this prestigious trophy five times.

It was really great to once again see a lady angler take part in the Bolster Cup, the first lady ever to take part in this competition was Mrs. P. Hanley M.P.S.I. from Fermoy in 1950, the winner on that occasion was Mr. D. Fitzgerald, Ballyhooly and the winner of the juvenile prize on that day was Master Jamie O’Mahony of Fermoy
