After a gap of almost 40 years, competitive boxing is returning to Castletownroche. The picturesque north Cork village has the honour of hosting the 5th annual St John's Boxing Club tournament much to the delight of club spokesman Pa Flynn.

"We're thrilled to be coming to Castletownroche on November 16, we've sixteen top class bouts lined up and everyone is looking forward to boxing in the refurbished community centre. John Mahon was the last man to organize a tournament there and it's great to be heading back after almost 40 years," Pa told The Avondhu this week.

Unknown to many, Castletownroche has a boxing past and Paddy Buckley from Mallow is credited with forming a club there in the 1940s.

Their annual tournament is one of the biggest nights of the year for members of St John's BC, and organizers are going all out to ensure the event is a success.

The public are also reminded that St John's BC will hold a church gate collection in Fermoy this weekend.
