There’s been a fantastic response to a copper coins collection organised by management and staff at Fermoy furniture store, Batavia.
A hand crafted timber bowl set aside for the now redundant 1 and 2 cent coins is almost full to overflowing, as the public continue to off-load the friendless coppers.
According to Irish Central Bank figures, they kept an average of €30 million worth of the 1 and 2 cent coins in circulation at any given time, however, even their considerable patience ran out as only a fraction of the coinage ever returned.
While pleased that they are eventually ‘rounding up’ these copper culprits, Central Bank officials believe the vast majority of coins continue to lie in households all over Ireland.
All coins deposited at the Batavia store in Fermoy will be forwarded to the Central Bank in due course, with 100% of the proceeds going to assist Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin.
For the purposes of Batavia’s collection, they will also accept 5 cent coins. Coins don’t have to be counted or sorted, just drop them in and Majella and company will take it from there.
