Local clubs clash in South Limerick Senior Football Final on Saturday
The South Tipperary village of Ballyporeen underlined its reputation as a nerve centre of handballing excellence by returning from the USA with a record haul of 10 medals, having competed in the 58th annual junior 40/20 nationals hosted by the town of Los Caballeros (near Los Angeles).
Showing outstanding commitment to their chosen sport, the 7 strong Ballyporeen team spent Christmas away from their families as they battled America's finest over several days.
The team were managed by Pat Ryan who said the lads had brought great honour to their parish, county and country.
"The lads were great ambassadors for their club, they all acquitted themselves exceptionally well in the face of some very stiff competition - their families can be very proud of them," he said.
HONOURED
Pat was among a capacity crowd who packed into the refurbished community centre in Ballyporeen last Saturday night at a function to honour the talented young handballers (John Ryan, Mikey Maher, Jack Coughlan, Jason Cahill, Jason English, Adrian English and Ceallach Hennessy). All the players made the semi-final stages, with national titles going to the trio of: Adrian English, Jack Coughlan and Jason Cahill.
Ballyporeen Handball Club was formally represented at last weekend's reception by officers: Enda Maher (chairman), Michael English (secretary) and his namesake, also Michael English (treasurer). Eddie Corbett, who has given sterling service to the club as a juvenile and adult, was also present. Ballyporeen Community Council was represented by Martin Neville.
Clogheen based councillor, Marie Murphy said she was delighted to be associated with the event. "These young men are great role models for our youth and it's entirely fitting that they be honoured in this way" she said.
Following formalities, guests were treated to refreshments served by caterer, Theresa Noonan.
