This year, an exciting new race will be added to the running calendar, with a new 5km race on Sunday, February 23, being organised by Galtee Runners, Mitchlestown/Ballygiblin Juvenile GAA Club, St Fanahan's Camogie Club and Ballygiblin Hurling Club.
The event is being run to raise funds for a walking trail around the perimeter of the Ballygiblin GAA grounds.
Johnny O'Sullivan of the Galtee Runners said that the run would be ideal for the seasoned club athlete and any fun runners who want to take part. He said that all of the Galtee Runners club members are looking forward to the event, which has a start time of 11am sharp. Adding that it's vital that the event starts on time, so as to minimise road disruptions in the area - they are very grateful to the residents living along the route, who have given their support to the event.
The 5km event promises to have a good mix of competitive runners as well as those who are novices and out for a fun day.
Mitchlestown/Ballygiblin Juvenile GAA Club secretary, Mike O'Brien, told The Avondhu that he's hopeful that parents, running club members and people from across the community will put on their runners and support this good cause to raise money for a walking trail in the area.
COMMUNITY BENEFIT
The walking trail will be of great benefit to all those living near Ballygiblin, as it will give people a safe walkway, which will mean that pedestrians can walk, run or jog safely away from cars and traffic and it will lend towards improved health and fitness for people of all ages in the area.
On Sunday, February 23, the day will begin with registration in the old Ballygiblin school from 9.30am until 10.45am, entry is €10. Participants will then take to the starting line, which is approximately 200m from the pitch. From there, the route will go to the church car park for a good wide turn around and then head back for the return journey to the finish line just before the pitch entrance.
"For an out and back course like this, it's important that all entrants stay to the left hand side throughout the route. Again thanks to residents for their co-operation with the temporary road closure. Horgan's Delicatessen Supplies have kindly given the use of their car park for parking on the day, and parking, changing rooms, toilets and showers can also be availed of at the GAA grounds," Johnny explained.
There will be a prize giving ceremony and refreshments afterwards in the old school house. Anyone seeking information can contact 086 2759248.
