Outstanding tug-of-war
The first race in the Ballycotton 5 mile series took place in Ballyandreen on Thursday, 9th May. This is always a popular series, even though the four races are tough, especially this first one. An amazing number of 634 athletes turned out, which was quite uncomfortable considering the narrowness of the road at the start, and the steep hill! Nevertheless, everyone got away safely.
The top thee runners on the night were Sean McGrath of East Cork in 25.53, John Meade of St Finbarrs AC in 26.06, and Michael Harty of East Cork AC in 26.09. The women’s race was won by Maura Regan of Eagle AC in 32.06. Nine Grange Fermoy AC athletes competed, posting some great results, Kealan O Connor came in 24th position in 29.11, followed by Brian O'Connor, 30.14. Brendan O'Mahony 31.30. Joan Ennis 35.36. Sean Freeman 35.41. Michael Ennis 36.01. John Griffin 36.30. Darren Flynn 36.38. Maurice Tobin 36.58.
Ballyandreen is a tough race so well done to all!! Thanks to Ballycotton Running Promotions, and to all the helpers and volunteers on the night.
FERMOY 5k ROAD RUNNING SERIES
The last race in the Fermoy 5k series took place on Thursday, 30th May last. It was a perfect evening for the event, with plenty of sunshine, and a nice crowd of 124 runners and walkers turned out. Great credit is due to Kieran Barry of the Fermoy Community Youth Centre, and to Kealan O’Connor who worked hard to publicise the series, and to ensure that everything went of smoothly.
The weather for the first two runs was abominable, but no complaints about this last race! The winner on this occasion was George Waugh of Bandon AC who finished in 16.25, with Allen Whitaker close behind to finish in 16.46, and Johnny O’Sullivan having a great run in 18.05. The women’s race was won by Ann Marie Hayes of St Catherine’s AC in 20.41, with Grange Fermoy AC’s Clothilde Fitzgibbon and Karen Kenny 2nd and 3rd home respectively.
Other local Grange Fermoy AC athletes taking part were Brian O’Connor who was 3rd man overall in the series, Maciej Sawicky, John O’Donovan who was 1st man overall in his category, Sean Freeman, Mike Ennis, Morris Tobin, Michael Pratt, Don Pyne and Tony Dunne.
Grange Fermoy AC women were represented by Clotilde who did us proud being the 2nd lady overall in the series, Karen Kenny 3rd lady overall in the series, Linda Murphy, Maggie Dunne, and Cait Ni Riordain. Now that this series is over plans are already in hand for next year, or maybe a winter series?? It’s great to have something here in Fermoy to encourage everyone to just get out and do it!
Thanks to the guards and the many volunteers who so ably shepherded the athletes around the course. And thanks also to the Youth Centre for providing refreshments after the race. Congratulations to all.
