Officers of the Fermoy Community TV organisation stated they were prepared to face jail, rather than bending to a directive from Minister Geoghegan Quinn, to shut down their rebeaming system, which had brought 6 channel broadcasting to the area for a number of years. Group treasurer, David Roche said the threat of jail didn’t worry officers, especially in his view, that he’d been in ‘much tighter spots’ during active service in the Congo and Cyprus. While chairman Eddie McConville was willing to share a cell with any of his group’s members, stating they would continue to provide “the best possible service until such time as the situation was resolved”.
It was all about raw sewage in Castletownroche, where the plight of residents of Chapel Street was raised by Councillor Carey Joyce at a Northern Area Council meeting. He claimed that raw sewage was ‘backing-up’ through residents’ pipes during times of high rainfall, being particularly noticeable during flash floods. However, Council engineers stressed that the problem was only an “occasional occurrence” which had no short-term solution. Cllr Joyce disagreed, with support from Deputy Ned O’Keeffe. The Council’s assistant county manager, Des Wixted said they’d look into the problem further.
