Cahir Post Office in South Tipperary was rammed at 5am on Wednesday morning with a digger believed to have been stolen from the Iarnrod Eireann premises in the town. The brazen attack has been described as 'an attack on the community' by Deputy Mattie McGrath.

“This was a premeditated and shocking assault on a vital community service for the people of Cahir and surrounding areas. I know that Henry Reidy and those who run the Post Office are decent hard-working people as is the staff so it is some small mercy that this violent attack did not occur during working hours when someone could have been seriously injured," the Independent TD said on Wednesday afternoon.

"This kind of attack highlights the need for a permanent, visible and readily available Garda presence in all our rural towns. It also demonstrates that there are individuals out there who will think nothing about endangering the property or resources of our communities and it is in light of that that I will be once again calling on Minister shatter to ensure we have a fully resourced full time Garda presence from this point on,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
