An application has been made by Waterford City & County Council for a 80km water conservation scheme in West Waterford, to curb the problem of water leaks. The scheme, if approved by Irish Water, is expected to begin in 2015.

The announcement was made by Pat McCarthy, Senior Engineer Roads Maintenance, at the October meeting of Dungarvan/Lismore Municipal District, following a query by councillor Declan Doocey on what Irish Water are doing to curb pipe leaks in the district. Mr McCarthy said the scheme ‘should help resolve the problem of leaks in the future’.

Cllr Doocey welcomed the application for funding, and said there is a serious need to address the issue of water leaks and wastage. He told the meeting that ‘asbestos piping and old pipes are causing huge trouble’.

He added: “We have people who are furious at having to fill out Irish Water forms, and then we’ve water flowing down the roads.”
