All square for Glenroe intermediates

10 points apiece with Bruff, as Glenroe intermediate hurlers opened their South hurling championship campaign for 2013.

The first round game of the South Intermediate hurling championship between Glenroe and Bruff ended all square when the sides met in bitterly cold and windy conditons in Kilmallock on Sunday evening last. This game also doubled up as an All County Hurling League game. Glenroe, playing with wind advantage in the first half, had two points on the board, from frees by Mark O’Connell, before Bruff got their opening score, a point from a 60m free. Mark O’Connell added two further points to give Glenroe a three point advantage by the 12th min. Glenroe were guilty of wayward shooting and had accumulated six wides by the time Bruff scored their second point in the 19th min. Glenroe added three further points, two from Mark O’Connell and one from Thomas Crawford, before half time to lead by 0-7 to 0-2 at the break.

Bruff hit four wides in succession followed by three points to reduce Glenroe’s lead to two points by the 41st min. DJ Sheehy and Mark O’Connell each scored a point to give a four point advantage to Glenroe at the end of the third quarter. Bruff replied with three points to leave the minimum of margins between the sides as the game entered the final ten minutes. DJ Sheehy scored Glenroe’s final point in the 56th min. Bruff scored two points in the final minutes to leave the sides on level terms at the final whistle. Best for Glenroe were J Murphy, JB Murphy, M Kelly, D McCarthy, M O’Connell and DJ Sheehy.

The numbers drawn in the recent draw were 1, 6, 8 and 26. There was no winner of the jackpot which now remains at €18,000 for the next draw on Thursday, 18th April. In the event of the jackpot not being won a second draw will take place for a second jackpot, starting at €1,000. U21s

A depleted Glenroe U21, 13-a-side hurling team were defeated by Askeaton-St Kieran’s in the final round game, which was played in Askeaton on Saturday afternoon last. Score 0-16 to 1-7. Glenroe finished as runners up in their group and they now meet Garryspillane in the county semi-final, which is scheduled to take place over the coming weekend.
