Water pressure in Ard Abhainn, Ballyhooly (or the lack of it), came up for discussion at Monday's Northern Meeting as the result of a motion by Cllr Noel McCarthy that the committee get an engineer's report as to why the water pressure at Ard Abhainn is inadequate periodically.
Cllr McCarthy said this is an ongoing problem and pointed out that residents had been without water almost three days recently.
Senior Executive Engineer Michael Savage, in a written reply, said the Council had carried out significant network management works over the last two years in Ballyhooly village which have led to an increas ein the pressure in the supply throughout the scheme and an overall more reliable supply in recent times.
"However, it should be noted that the works that were carried out by Cork County Council has only improved things in the short term and that the supply network in and around the village is operating at close to maximum capacity."
The letter went on to explain that part of the supply problems is due to the size of the existing main which is only 100mm/125mm in diamater and that any draw on the system can have an effect regarding pressure in certain areas.
Mr Savage explained there are two issues that arise from time to time that cause periodic pressure problems, these being when leaks occur (as is usual in any scheme) or when a draw comes from the nearby Lios Ard Estate. The latter is a private estate not yet taken in charge by the Council.
Concluding, he said the long term solution to the problem is to increase the distribution main from the reservoir to the village by installing an additional watermain.
