A young 11-year-old girl took it upon herself to do a walk in memory of her late grandmother and over the summer, her friends and family members joined together to climb Galtee Mor - raising €1,343 for the Friends of Marymount Hospice.

Leanne Roche from Mitchelstown, is a fifth class student in Bunscoil na Toirbhirte, and, following on from her mother Anne's involvement in the race night for Drive to Survive, she wanted to do something with the family to raise money for Marymount and also as a special way to remember her grandmother Nellie Finn, who passed away before Leanne was born.

The climb took place over the summer and it was organised by Leanne, with the help of her parents Anne and Brian and her brother Killian. Her mother Anne said that people's support was 'overwhelming'.

"We're very proud of Leanne for organising it all as well, it was great of her to think of doing something for her grandmother," Anne said.

The climb was organised to coincide with the same month as Nellie's birthday and just a few months before the anniversary of her death, so it was an emotional but very rewarding experience for all who took part.

The family would like to thank everyone who supported them and particularly John Cleary, Pat Ronan, Centra Fermoy, Bridget Fitzgerald, Sean Keane, Niall Barry and John Courtney who took care of the barbecue afterwards in Walsh's Bar.
