A fundraising initiative thought up by Fermoy Gardaí and Fermoy Neighbourhood Watch which was successfully run with the help of the owners and staff at The Grand Hotel in Fermoy, raised €500 for aid for the municipality of Balombon in the Philippines. The area, which has a population of over 20,000 people, was badly affected by Typhoon Haiyan in November.

The hotel organised a number of special offers based around teas and coffees available every day at a small cost in the run up to Christmas. The hotel donated 20% of the price of every special purchased. They also placed an appeal box at the bar counter to allow people to make donations.

On Monday the cheque was handed over to Fermoy Gardai and Fermoy Neighbourhood Watch by hotel manager John Hynes. Sincere thanks was extended to Joe and Cliona Kearney and their staff at The Grand Hotel for running with the initiative and to all those who supported it.
