Palace Players open with Tom Murphy comedy
Some might be sceptical of taking part in any kind of competition on Friday 13th, but as that dubious date marks the opening night of the North Cork Drama Festival in Charleville, the Doonbeg Drama Group from Co Clare will play 'The Price' on the stage of the famed town hall with adjudicator Michael Twomey, overseeing their every move.
This year's festival promises to be hugely exciting and entertaining event, judging by the impressive programme of plays on offer over the nine nights.
Six groups will battle it out in the open section with three in the confined - the first of the latter being the aforementioned Doonbeg Drama Group.
The Kilworth/Fermoy-based Palace Players will get the ball rolling on Saturday night with the first of four consecutive plays in the open section, their offering being Tom Murphy's acclaimed comedy 'Conversations On A Homecoming'. This will be followed on Sunday night by Corofin DG with 'The 39 Steps' by Patrick Barlow;
Monday night will bring Yellow Moon Theatre Group with Brian Friel's classic 'Dancing At Lughnasa' while Tuesday will see Carlow Little Theatre Group travel from Co Wexford to strut their stuff with the wonderful 'Kings Of The Kilburn High Road' by Jimmy Murphy.
With the back now well and truly broken in the competition, Take 5 (with a win already under their belt) will showcase their production of 'MOMologues' on Wednesday night, a play co-written by Lisa Rafferty, Stefanie Cloutier and Sheila Eppolito. This is the second in the second of the confined plays and it will be followed on Thursday by another open group - Ennis Players, who will bring us back to the open section with 'The Mai' by Marina Carr.
The confined section has its final contender on Friday night (20th) with old favourites Skibbereen Theatre Society who will bring their 'Family Plot' by Darragh Carville to the North Cork stage. Saturday night (21st) will be make your mind up time for Michael Twomey when Thurles Drama Group's will present the final open play - 'Beyond the Brooklyn Sky' by Michael Hilliard Mulcahy.
