It would appear that the Government is hell bent in further undermining post offices around the country by handing core Post Office business over to the commercial banks. Surely the post office network has suffered enough?

Postmasters across the country have returned thousands of new Social Protection forms to Minister Joan Burton’s Department in protest against their usage. The forms recommended that people receive their payments by direct debit to a bank account, instead of using the Post Office.

Why is it that when so many people want to use the Post Office instead of paying fees to banks, that nobody in Government listens? Social Protection payments account for 30% of Post Offices business and has a spin off value as high as 50%.

After strong public outcry, Minister Burton conceded that the forms were not appropriate and promised that new forms would be developed. One wonders what the new forms will contain?

Nearer to home, it would appear that Mitchelstown's loss will be Fermoy's gain with the transfer of 11 jobs to An Post's delivery service unit at the Faber Castell complex in Fermoy.
