On Sunday, 21st June the streets of Bartlemy came alive with runners and walkers galore who came in their droves to take part in the Sinead Shines 6km fun run.
The sun shone and the atmosphere was electric on what was a fantastic morning! The main street of Bartlemy was closed off to traffic and with walkers and runners filling the street and the hum of anticipation in the air it really added to the party and fun atmosphere of the day.
Over 250 walkers hit the roads at 11am to complete the 6km course, with one special local man, Jim-Bob, taking on the course on crutches as he returns from a serious injury. Jim-Bob is a local legend and really took on this challenge head on, with an amazingly positive attitude, and through his hard work he raised €800 for the Sinead Shines Fund – well done Jim-Bob!
Before the start of the run, all competitors were treated to a Max Fitness warm-up with Caroline McAteer, representing Max Fitness & Sports Therapy, the races main sponsor. With everyone put through their paces, runners crossed the start line at 12 noon.
The 6km course is definitely a challenging course, but showcases all the beautiful scenery that Bartlemy has to offer (as well as plenty of the hills that Bartlemy is famous for!) High temperatures on the day added to the overall challenge, but over 150 runners battled it out, with Shane Healy of Tracton first man over the finish line, with Joan Ennis of Grange-Fermoy first lady home.
Well done also to David Barry who was first junior boy over the line and Sarah Morrison, of Castlelyons, who was first junior girl home.
On the day there was a fantastic representation of clubs from around the area – Max Runners (Rathcormac/Bartlemy), Grange Fermoy, St Nicholas AC, Wathergrasshill AC, Mooreabbey Milers, St Catherines, Tracton, Ballintotis Fit 4 Life, Bandon Fit 4 Life, Carraig na bhFhear, Eagle AC, Flynn’s Flyers, Leevale AC, Midleton AC, Wibbly-Wobbly-Wonders and Rathfarnham AC, as well as so many unattached runners and walkers from near and far. The support of every single person was greatly appreciated, and a staggering €5,195 was raised on the day!
Cash prizes were given to the first man and lady home, which were sponsored by Max Fitness & Sports Therapy, so all monies raised on the day went directly to the Sinead Shines Fund.
A special mention to Joan Ennis of Grange-Fermoy, who gave her winner’s prize to the Sinead Shines Fund – what a lovely gesture and very much appreciated!
Events like this would not be possible without a strong organising committee and on the day everyone commented on how well run and smoothly everything went. A big pat on the back to the committee, consisting of Betty Cahill, Siobhan Cashman, Pat Murphy, James Aherne, Emilija Dorgan, Trish Kearney, Mary Connor, Josie Magee and Brenda Murphy.
Thank you to Maurice Tobin and Brian of Grange-Fermoy AC and Emilija Dorgan and Pat Murphy who had the task of running and marking the course prior to race day and a big thank you to Anthony Prendergast who remarked the entire course before the start of the race. A special thanks also to Liam Barry of Fermoy Print for race numbers, poster and fliers and to TVM for providing amplification for the occasion.
A special thank you to everyone who helped on the day – organising parking, driving the course with runners and walkers, stewarding on the roads and junctions, helping on the registration desk, providing baking and sandwiches for the refreshments after the race as well serving teas and coffees in the community hall after the run.
A big thank you also to everyone who provided spot prizes for the race and to Max Fitness & Sports Therapy, Rathcormac for sponsoring the race. It was fantastic to see the entire community pull together to make this such an amazing day as well as a brilliant fundraiser for the Sinead Shines Fund.
