‘Locals fantastic but business down’ say Mitchelstown traders

Two speed-ramps planned for the Strawhall Road in Fermoy have been welcomed as a measure to greatly improve public safety in the populated area.
Following representation on the issue by Cllr Noel McCarthy, an engineers report was prepared and the green light has been given to two new speed-ramps.
Line markings are presently in place, one near the Strawhall Nursing Home and one near the Baile Ard Estate. Welcoming the safety measures, Cllr McCarthy believes the ramps are necessary to increase pedestrian safety in Strawhall.
“The traffic travelling through this area will have to slow down once the speed-ramps are introduced, they will therefore make the road safer. It’s a populated and busy area, there are lots of young people in the area and so I would welcome these measures.”
The work is expected to completed within two or three weeks, said Cllr McCarthy. He also acknowledged the work of Senior Executive Engineer, Brendan O’Gorman for his work in securing the project.
Baile Ard Estate resident, Joe Tobin gave his welcome to the speed-ramps this week, and thanked Cllr McCarthy and his fellow councillors for their efforts to secure the ramps.
“Myself and all the residents up there felt it was an important issue because the speed of the cars coming down Strawhall Road was an issue for out entrance, and we felt it was better to get something done before someone is killed there,” he told The Avondhu.
“They’ll slow down the cars coming down Strawhall immensely, because the speed they’re coming down was unbelievable. When people realise there’s speed ramps there, they’ll certainly slow down.”
While this work has gotten the go-ahead from Cork County Council, Mr Tobin said this is only the completion of one phase of works for the area.
“We are also appealing on the council to move back the entrance four or five feet from the front of the road so give more of a view to the cars coming out of Baile Ard because vision is bad coming out there. Phase one is completed, now we’re looking for phase two,” he added.
