Cappoquin gears up for St Patrick's gathering

The countdown is officially on for Cappoquin’s St Patrick's Day celebrations in which have been expanded this year to encompass a whole weekend of entertainment as part of The Gathering 2013.

An exciting line-up of events and outdoor entertainment culminating in the town's annual parade on Sunday, March 17th promises to deliver something for everyone when festivities kick off in the West Waterford town on Friday, March 15th with the much anticipated launch of the book, A Stitch in Time which pays tribute to the Lonergan brothers.

The book brings together no less than sixteen articles penned by different people all giving a unique perspective on the life of the tailors who were well known, liked and respected in the area and it promises a fascinating read.

The festivities continue on Saturday with open air entertainment planned for the town centre commencing at 1pm continuing right throughout the afternoon. The ever popular farmers' market will also operate from the square offering visitors the chance to avail of a selection of home baking and local produce.

Organisers are particularly excited to have secured an appearance by Beatz Pete who will bring his Drumbash show to the streets complete with fire breather which promises to wow onlookers. Drumbash is a fully interactive percussion workshop, where the public can join in and have fun making rhythms with a wide range of drumming instruments. Beatz Pete as he is known will be on hand to teach a range of world rhythms and songs from around the world.

A Cappoquin dance and rhythm will also be created, so Pete will be on the lookout for volunteers to lead the group! Instruments are provided, but please feel free to bring or make a special drum!

This will be complemented with performances throughout the afternoon aboard the gig rig from local set dancers, traditional musicians and the Cappoquin Marching Band.

The celebrations continue on March 17th with the town's fifth annual St Patrick's Day Parade which will once again be led by the Marching Band.

With the popularity of this event growing year on year this time round is expected to see a record number of entries to the parade which welcomes both motorised vehicles and walking groups as well as individuals wishing to make an impression with fancy dress.

The parade will again follow the same route as previous years commencing at 12.30pm at lower mains street from Twigbog and continuing right up through the town as far as Shanbally. Entry forms are now available at Cappoquin Credit Union, Cappoquin Post Office and Mary Murray's foodstore.

Festival PRO Davina Mooney said they are extending a Ceád Míle Fáilte to visitors both home and abroad for the weekend.

“Our aim is to create a memorable experience for all those with Cappoquin connections who choose to join with us throughout the weekend. There will be no better time to visit as there will be plenty to see and do over the three days of our Gathering celebration. We are delighted that Cappoquin Heritage Group has come on board with the launch of ‘A Stitch in Time’ which will get the weekend off to a great start and we look forward to creating a carnival like atmosphere on the streets of the town for the three day festival,” said Davina.
