It was believed that GAA history was made in January 1992, when Kilworth housewife Peg Sheedy was elected to the position of club chairperson with the local club. Married to husband Fred, with four children, the family had a proud GAA tradition, with Peg herself winner of several camogie medals, while husband Fred was stalwart of the many great Kilworth and Avondhu teams in the 60s and 70s. It was thought she was the first ever lady chairperson of a GAA club in the country at the time.

Fr Kevin Doheny, envoy for Mother Teresa, paid a visit to Mitchelstown and afforded The Avondhu an interview, while also visiting charity worker, Josephine O’Connor. He sincerely hoped that the people of Mitchelstown and surrounding towns and villages would help in the cause of all those refugees struggling throughout the World.

There was plenty to report in the weekly ‘Garda Report’: Hubcaps were found on Monument Hill, Fermoy; Donation boxes in Shanballymore church were opened and emptied of their contents over the Christmas period, while two premises in the village were also entered, including the priest’s house; Dud cheques were being passed in Fermoy, Cahir, Macroom, Thurles and Templemore, with the culprit being identified as a man in his 30’s, approx 6’ tall. Meanwhile, a ladies Gucci watch was reported lost in Fermoy.

The permit granted by Cork County Council for the controversial injection of waste products was under scrutiny, with Cllr Aileen Pyne having uncovered several more townlands which were included in the Rathcormac/Castlelyons area. These included Toberneague, Rathcormac Mountain, Knockadroleen, Kilbrien, Gneeves, Gortroe, Curraghteenmore, Curraghprevin, Barranahash, Coolnahilla, Dromruagh, Ballybrowney Upper and Lower, and Ballynahina. Those concerned on the environmental impacts of this waste disposal method, said that all injection had now stopped, only due to the fact that that permit had expired on New Year’s Day, and they would remain vigilant in the area to prevent any possible breech of the license.

St Catherines Ballad Group were hitting the headlines once again, having qualified for the Munster Scór final, following their semi-final performance in Banteer. The group, consisting of Laura and Michelle Burke, Martha Ahern, Claire Paul and Susan Finn, came ahead of Dunhill from Waterford. County Waterford also were well represented, with Ballysaggart’s Ann Carey qualifying in solo singing; while Colette Noonan and Raymond Dempsey from Ballyduff qualified in the instrumental music category.

Cork star Cathal Casey was guest at the Bride Rovers Juvenile GAA annual social. A capacity gathering in The Rathcormac Inn saw chairman Tom Barry review what had been a successful year, with presentations made to the U14 footballers (East Cork medals) and the U16 hurlers.

Kildorrery GAA saw an appeal by chairman, Tony McCarthy at the club AGM, for greater effort towards hurling within the club, following what appeared to be a ‘low ebb’ in the game. No doubt notice was taken at the time and a concentration on hurling commenced, following the great success at Munster level in 2012!
