Glenville has seen huge housing developments in recent years but the club heartland is still very rural. Social isolation is seen as a problem. To counter this, the local GAA club members have been proactive in taking steps to create a positive environment for men in their area.
The GAA’s Social Initiative has been launched to provide opportunities for men in the community who wish to re-connect with regular and meaningful social contact and who would welcome the chance to revive their social lives again in ways they would enjoy.
The Initiative uses the GAA Club network to provide opportunities for men to participate more fully in local community life. It assists the clubs in organising activities and events aimed specifically at men.
Glenville GAA club began its involvement with the Social Initiative in May of 2012 when it organized a gala performance of Seamus O’Rourke’s comedy ‘Victor’s Dung’. This is something the club is repeating on this Friday night, 18th January but this time with a performance of O’Rourke’s latest play, ‘For Club and County’. The play will be staged in Watergrasshill Community Hall and the programme which includes live pre-play music commences at 7.30pm with the play starting at 8.15pm.
“We are appealing for a good turnout as we are guaranteed a night of great drama,” a club spokesperson told The Avondhu this week. Further information from 087-6994699 or on email: secretary.glenville.cork@gaa.ie.
