Voice of Ireland personality, Kelly McDonagh-Mongan, was special guest at last week's Green Flag ceremony in Castlelyons National School. This is the school's 3rd Green Flag, the other two being awarded for recycling and energy conservation - this latest award is for efficient use of water.

Overseeing the school's commitment to environmentally friendly practices is teacher, Anne O'Sullivan. Prior to the flag raising, principal, Nelius de Róiste paid tribute to Mrs O'Sullivan and her hardworking Green Flag committee. Mr de Róiste also acknowledged the contribution of Paul Murphy, who provided the sound system for the ceremony, An Taisce (who support the initiative), school caretaker, John McCarthy and parents whose support is crucial to the school's green flag philosophy. Green Flag committee member, Brendan O'Mahony outlined the background to securing the school's third flag. A specially commissioned Green Flag rap was also performed.

As part of the formalities, pupils, Conor McCarthy (6th class) and Abbie Quirke (5th class) presented Kelly with a bouquet of flowers. The youngest (Cathal Sheehan) and eldest (Grainne McCarthy) members of the Green Flag committee assisted Kelly with the flag raising which was carried out under brilliant sunshine.

Kelly said she was impressed by the effort put in by students and encouraged them to remain committed to the ideals of the Green Flag. To celebrate the role played by pupils in securing the flag, they were given a special treat which was gratefully received.
