Trócaire has welcomed the announcement by the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference that Bishop William Crean, Bishop of Cloyne, has been appointed the new chair of Trócaire and a member of the trustees of Trócaire. He succeeds Bishop John Kirby, Bishop of Clonfert, who has retired as chair.
On his appointment, Bishop Crean expressed his appreciation for the work undertaken by Bishop Kirby during his 20 years as Trócaire's chair.
"As the Irish Catholic Church's overseas development agency, Trócaire works with the poor and marginalised in the developing world, helping them and their communities out of poverty. Bishop Kirby has been a compassionate advocate for Trócaire's work and was deeply committed to the pursuit of justice for the world’s poorest people. On behalf of the trustees, board and staff, I thank him for his tireless effort and commitment to his role over many years,” Bishop Crean said.
Paying tribute to the outgoing chair, Justin Kilcullen, Executive Director of Trocaire said Bishop Kirby visited our programme work in South Africa, Rwanda, Angola, Central and Southern America, Timor Leste, Kenya, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Northern Uganda and most recently, Pakistan.
"As chair he was respectful of everyone’s viewpoint and decisions were always made with great empathy for, and solidarity with, the world’s poor. I thank him for his hard work and dedication to the role."
Concluding, Justin Kilcullen added that this being Trócaire's 40th anniversary, it is a time of transition for the organisation with the appointment of a new chair and shortly, a new executive director.
"I am very confident that Bishop Crean together with the new director, will successfully lead and develop the organisation into the future and continue to work to tackle the root causes of poverty and help to overcome the challenges faced by communities in the hardest hit regions of the world."
