The Avondhu can now confirm that the site clearance work for the new community leisure centre in Mitchelstown will start in a few weeks.

Ben Lynch, Chairman of the Leisure Group said that the tender process was completed a few weeks ago and the successful tender agreed, but some ‘minor issues’ concerning the project have had to be dealt with between the building company and the professional team acting for the Leisure Group.

"It has been frustrating, to say the least," admitted Ben, adding that they are now delighted to be pressing ahead with the development.

"This is a real good news story for Mitchelstown as the leisure centre will have benefits for every member of our community for many years to come. We had hoped to have the builder on site at this stage but we’ve had to be patient to get all the details ironed out. Better to do that now, than have regrets later," Ben said.

Ben would not reveal who the chosen builder is, but he did confirm that they have had experience working in Mitchelstown.

"We won’t release the name until we’re ready to sign the contract, which could be before the end of the month. However, we’ve been impressed so far with their determination to sort out problems and they are as keen as we are to get started. They want to have the benefit of summer weather conditions to get the ground works completed," Ben explained.

The leisure centre will comprise of a 600 square metre multi-purpose sports hall, an activity hall, fitness suite, changing facilities and meeting rooms, as well as two outdoor five-a-side all-weather playing pitches. The site will be landscaped to include an outdoor plaza area, which will be an amenity for all the community.

During the construction phase, which is expected to last until June 2014, a temporary access will replace the long-established Brother’s Path to and from the CBS schools. This will be located at the boundary with Tesco.

"This is necessary for health and safety reasons as everyone agrees that children cannot have access through a working site. The Brother’s Path will re-open in its current location afterwards," Ben concluded.
