“The units were put in place at considerable cost to allow dog owners to act responsibly for the benefit of other pedestrians. Undoing the good work that went into installing these units is most regrettable,” he said.

A pooper scooper receptacle placed on the Barnane Walk in Fermoy has been vandalised, leaving only the outer casing of the container in place.

The receptacles, containing plastic bags to allow dog owners dispose of their dog's waste safely and properly instead of allowing it to foul footpaths and green areas, were fitted and supplied at a number of popular walking spots around the town by the Tidy Towns committee with support from Fermoy Town Council. Tidy Towns Chairman Noel McCarthy says they've been contacted since by residents of other areas of the town asking that the units be supplied in their areas.

Committee PRO Tadhg O'Donovan criticised those responsible for vandalising the unit. "It was put there for a purpose. Dog fouling bespoils our amenity areas and, apart from being unsightly, it can be dangerous. I denounce the mean-spirited person or persons who did this," he said.

Noel McCarthy was also critical. "The units were put in place at considerable cost to allow dog owners to act responsibly for the benefit of other pedestrians. Undoing the good work that went into installing these units is most regrettable," he said.
