Next week, the ever popular free children's summer book bus will be returning to Clogheen for the fourth year running.

Run by Tipperary Libraries the bus is a great way for children to continue reading throughout the summer months.

The book bus will be in Clogheen Community Centre every Tuesday morning for six weeks from 10.30am until 12.30pm starting on July 16 and it will be in Mullinahone carpark on Tuesday afternoons between 2.30pm and 4.30pm for six weeks.

"More and more research is confirming that there is a very strong link between reading for leisure from a young age and improved reading and writing standards and overall academic performance. Vocabulary in non-fiction books relevant to history, science and geography can be daunting for many children. Therefore, exposure to as much variety of text as possible is a huge advantage," Emer O’Brien, Senior Executive Librarian with Tipperary Libraries said.

She added that a local library service provides a great variety of books at great value and she said that if it's sunny, a book is a great way to help kids relax and enjoy the sunshine and it can also feed their imagination during the wet days.

Each child will also be awarded a leaf for every book they read and each leaf is pinned to a tree in the bus, so that as their minds take in more stories and tales, the tree blossoms and each child will receive a certificate at the end of the summer at the summer reading parties in Clonmel and Cahir libraries.

"Summer reading is a fantastic opportunity to help your children foster a love of reading for pleasure outside of the school environment. It is a habit and a gift that your child will enjoy for life and will thank you for. They will also find returning to school easier as well," Emer added.

Emer also said that it is never too early to start reading and parents can 'share read' books with their younger children.

The future existence of the summer book bus in Clogheen and Mullinahone depends on the success of each previous year, and while many other areas have looked for this service, Tipperary Libraries have said that they are committed to providing it in Clogheen and Mullinahone, as long as the demand is there, so it is up to parents and children to make sure that the bus returns next summer.

Tipperary Libraries would like to thank South Tipperary Development Company who helped them to buy new quality stock, the staff at Clonmel and Cahir libraries, library HQ staff, local volunteers particularly Cllr Marie Murphy for all of her help and support and the local national school principals and teachers for supported and promoting the book bus each year.
