We welcome home the Irish Karate Team from the IJKA World Open Karate championships in Bulgaria with their two new world champions and a cache of no less than 20 medals.

Congratulations to sensei Brian Toomey who won the gold in the masters kata category, a silver in both the senior men's kata and the team kata and a bronze in the senior men's kata and the team kata, and to sensei Martin Sheehan, Kildorrery Karate Club, who took gold in both the senior men's heavyweight and the open weight kumite divisions. Well done Brian and Martin on this fantastic achievement you have done yourselves, your clubs, your country and karate proud. Osu!

The senior kumite team took second spot on the podium with five silver medals, as did the mixed team taking three silver medals in the kumite final. We had a clean sweep in the men's individual open weight kumite category with Martin Sheehan winning gold, Joe Hunter the silver, and Ross Daly the bronze - what a result bringing a whole new meaning to the term ‘The Fighting Irish’.

The senior team kata event saw us coming away with third place and another three bronze medals. Galway man Craig Dempsey won the bronze in the individual kata discipline, and a great display from Rebecca Palmer earned her the bronze in the ladies u 21 individual kata. Irish eyes were smiling in Bulgaria. All these athletes must be commended for their dedication, discipline and endless hours of training and what great ambassadors they are for the sport.

A big thank you to all who helped out with the squad training and preparation over the past few months, especially Tipp man sensei P J Moloney (himself a former world kumite champion) who looked after the kumite disciplines, and sensei Brian Toomey who took charge of the team for the kata events.

Congratulations to Tomasz Kasiciewicz our junior student of the week. Jim Condon presented a delighted Tomasz with his medal and certificate after last Thursday's junior beginner class.

Thank you to sensei Steve Collins and all who helped out with last week's training programme. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome all the junior beginners who have started with us over the past few weeks and a reminder to parents that classes continue as normal over the school holidays.

We will be holding our annual flag day in Fermoy on Saturday, August 3rd and if you have an hour or two free to help with the collection, we would be delighted to hear from you. Thanks to all who have handed in their names already.

The club would like to extend our sympathy to the McLellan family on Tom's untimely passing.

Training is at the usual times and with beginners' classes for both adults and children ongoing every week, why not come along to Fermoy Leisure Centre and check us our your first lesson is free. For further information, contact Brian Toomey on 087-2500783. Keep practising and until next week, osu!
