A famous face was spotted around town in both Fermoy and Mitchelstown last week. Irish born actor Gabriel Byrne chose the Grand Hotel in Fermoy for a stay while touring around the area. He was accompanied by his brother and other family members during his visit.

The star of the Hollywood films ‘The Usual Suspects’, ‘Miller’s Crossing’, ‘Into the West’ and a string of other well known movies had coffee in Cafe Mocha in Fitzgerald Place where he obliged with an autograph and photo.  He also called into Joe Murphy’s Menswear shop in Pearse Square where he was served by Ray Murphy and sales assistant John. Ray said the debonair star spent half an hour or more in the shop and purchased a range of clothing. He said the star was friendly and amiable, telling Ray when he raised the subject of The Gathering and the furore Byrne’s remarks about it had made earlier this year, that what he’d said had been taken somewhat out of context. “He left here looking well!” Ray laughed.

In March 2010, Byrne was appointed cultural ambassador to Ireland, charged with helping to develop Irish arts and culture. He served for just a year of the three-year appointment, citing career commitments as the reason for his resignation. It was speculated that he was in Fermoy for the International Poetry Festival. Margo Barry of the organising committee bumped into him in the town, gave him a programme and invited him along to some of the events.

In Mitchelstown he caused a stir when he was spotted in the popular O’Callaghan’s restaurant and delicatessen.
