During Nursing Homes Week, which ran from August 26 until September 1, Padre Pio Rest Home in Cappoquin marked the celebrations by holding a host of activities for the residents, their families and the staff members.

One of the highlights of the week included a traditional music and dancing evening from a local band, which saw the generational divide get smaller as young and old fused together and due to the lovely weather, this was held outdoors.

There was also a visit from a local beekeeper, who gave a very entertaining and educational talk about beekeeping. He also brought an enclosed glass hive, so that people could watch the bees at work, while he explained each of the bee's responsibilities and the vital part each of them play to keep the honey making process going without a hitch.

During the Reminiscence Evening, residents went through the books 'At School by the River Bend', 'Them Golden Fields' and 'The Secrets of Ireland', before discussing their own stories and memories of school as well as their knowledge of the areas involved in the three local books.

The residents are also involved in the Big Knit for the fifth year and they have started knitting their little hats for the Innocent juice bottles and are looking forward to seeing them in the shops. A contribution from every bottle sold goes towards Age Action, in support of keeping older people warm this winter.

Every week, the residents are busy with activities such as Sonas sessions, Mass, bingo, arts and crafts, ball games, as well as keeping up to date with local news through the local newspapers and parish notes.

The nursing home always operate a 'door is always open and the kettle is always hot' approach and family and friends of the residents, as well as members of the community, are invited and more than welcome to attend any activities happening there.
