EirGrid this week revealed plans to develop a €500 million grid link project to link Munster and Leinster with 400kV overhead power lines. They have just opened up the twelve-week public consultation process and the public can give submissions and feedback until November 26.

There are a number of 1km wide route corridor options (as shown in the map) and on Tuesday, October 1, from 1pm until 8pm there will be an open day in Corrin Event Centre, Fermoy where the Grid Link Project team will be on hand to answer questions, take feedback and explain the project.

There are also information centres open from noon until 6pm and not on bank holidays in Midleton (Mondays), Carlow (Thursdays), Carrick-on-Suir (Tuesdays), Kilcullen (Mondays, not bank holidays) and New Ross (Wednesdays), where people can speak to the team.

This public consultation is aimed at helping EirGrid to identify which route best avoids social, environmental and technical constraints as well as others.

Grid Link Project manager, John Lowry said that the project will provide jobs in the South and East and with the reliable electricity supply, investment may also be attracted.

He added that a planning application for the chosen route will not take place before 2015.
