Glenroe Harvest Festival celebrations off to a good start

If the start is anything to go by, then the remaining programme at the Glenroe Harvest Festival will prove a big success, with some top attractions, including Bagatelle, set to draw the crowds.

Glenroe Harvest Festival 2013 is up and running. In keeping with the year that's in it, there was a strong 'Gathering' theme to last Saturday's activities, which comprised a guided tour of Scoil Mhuire National School, family 'tracing' workshop with Tim O'Connell, an address by the famed Bard of Mologga Mike Cullen Aherne, afternoon tea, a 'Gathering' Mass and a night of traditional Irish music in the marquee with Perfect Friction.

As the harvest festival receives strong backing from the local GAA club, it was nice to see former Glenroe greats being honoured at a function on Saturday night. The teams that received commemorative certificates were, the county junior hurling champions of 1974, 1992 and 2000. All are fighting fit with many still actively involved in promoting Gaelic games within the parish. Well known GAA correspondent and historian, Matt O'Callaghan, gave a run down on the exploits of the players concerned.

PROGRAMME CONTINUES

There's no let up in the festival programme and if anything, things will get busier in the days ahead. A ladies night is scheduled for Wednesday 11th - traditionally the women of Glenroe are very good to support these kinds of events.

On Thursday 12th, patrons will be treated to a live performance by singer/songwriter Lisa McHugh, the following evening we have bingo and then it's the big build up to the monster barbecue on Saturday night (14th September) with the legendary Bagatelle providing the music - D.J. James Murphy will do the late night entertaining.

As usual Glenroe Harvest Festival has been characterised by good organisation and in this particular community there's never any shortage of willing helpers. After an encouraging start, hopes are high that the public will turn out in large numbers this weekend to make festival 2013 a resounding success.
