Success in the National Tidy Towns Awards is a marathon, not a sprint, and it takes time to work on the various headings that adjudicators focus in on.
Kilworth Village Renewal oversee preparations for the Tidy Towns adjudication and understandably they were interested to learn how they got on when the results were announced this week.
Overall Kilworth did very well, improving its standing by 3 points on last year and coming second in North Cork's category B section.
A huge amount of work has been done in recent years and this was reflected in the adjudicator's report which was complimentary of the village's general tidiness - the demense walls, playground, old national school, sports complex along with the residential areas of Cois Coillte, Daly's Terrace and Heaphy Grove were all favourably commented upon. Kilworth scored very highly in the landscaping category due in no small way to the layout and appearance of the Glanworth Road (between the garda station and Molly Barry's Cross).
Unoccupied buildings and the state of some footpaths were highlighted as negatives. Reflecting on the results this week, members of Kilworth Village Renewal were heartened by the report and confident that, with the necessary goodwill and support, those all important extra points could be secured for next year. The village renewal committee has a dedicated group of core supporters but is always on the lookout for 'new blood'.
