The area’s villages are leading the way in the annual Tidy Towns competition.

The area's villages are leading the way in the annual Tidy Towns competition. Coolagown took gold for the sixth year in a row, emerging the tidiest village in the whole of county Cork, the second tidiest village in Ireland and number three overall in the competition.

Castletownroche was up six points, it's total of 298 leading to a 'highly commended' accolade from judges. Kilworth, which had managed to improve its score by three points to gain 297, was commended.

In its report, judges said of Castletownroche: "A visit to Castletownroche is a delight, whether just passing through or staying for a period. There is no denying the comprehensive nature of the volunteerism in your community. This illustrates the strength of the community spirit in Castletownroche and the pride people have in their native place. This pride has been expressed for many years prior to this but your expression of pride is a worthy legacy to coming generations of Tidy Towns' committees."

Kilworth was commended for its comprehensive three year plan and its attitude to village identity.

Kildorrery showed the biggest improvement and that was reflected in their award of  a whopping 11 extra points to obtain a score of 279. Doneraile was up seven points to 255 and Castlelyons-Bridesbridge was up two to 293.

Members of Coolagown Community Development, Kilworth Village Renewal and Castletownroche Tidy Towns travelled up to The Helix in Dublin on Monday for their awards.
